To His Excellency

Enclosure 1.

C.

10 AUS 4 Sir Frederick John Dealtry Lugard, G.C.M.G., C.B., D.S.O..

Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony of Hong- -kong and its Dependencies, and Vice-Admiral of the same.

The Humble Petition of the Under- -signed Chinese residents of Victoria in the Colony of Hongkong.

Humbly Sheweth:-

1. That your petitioners are eighteen of the leading Mem- -bers of the Chinese Community of Hongkong, all of whom are per- -manent residents in this Colony, and most of them are British subjects. They are petitioning on behalf of themselves and their fellow countrymen who have made this Colony their home.

2. That for the last few years the question of a permanent cemetery has become acute among that section of the Chinese inhabitants which has resided in Hongkong for a large number of years and has no intention of returning to China save for tempora-

social, commercial or otherwise. -ry purposes

3.

That there exists a number of cemeteries for Chinese throughout the Colony, but, with the exception of the one assigned to Chinese Christians, none of them can be considered to be a permanent place of burial, as all of them are liable to periodical and frequent removal of the bodies interred therein. Furthermore, not one of the said cemeteries is well laid out and planted with shrubs, trees, ornamental plants or flowers.

4. That the Colonial Cemetery otherwise known as the Protestant Cemetery is nicely laid out and kept, but is filling up rapidly, and very few indeed of the leading Chinese residents can ever hope to obtain places therein for the burial of their dead.
